A good cleaning routine is not complicated. Most problems come from one of two extremes: a quick rinse that leaves moisture in seams, or an aggressive “deep clean” that damages the motor, coating or soft material.
The correct method depends on the product’s material and water-resistance rating. The manual wins every time. “Rechargeable” does not mean waterproof, and “waterproof” does not mean every charging port or detachable accessory should be treated the same way.
A reliable routine for most non-porous toys
- Turn the product off and disconnect chargers, remotes and removable batteries.
- Check the manufacturer’s cleaning and water-resistance instructions.
- Wash the body-contact surface with warm water and mild, fragrance-free soap, or use an approved toy cleaner.
- Pay attention to seams, buttons, ridges and openings without flooding unsealed electronics.
- Rinse away all cleaner where rinsing is permitted.
- Dry with a clean lint-free cloth, then allow the product to air-dry completely.
- Store only when fully dry.

Waterproof, splash-resistant or neither?
| Label | What it usually means for cleaning |
|---|---|
| Waterproof / submersible with a stated rating | The sealed product can generally be rinsed or submerged within the manufacturer’s limits |
| Water-resistant / splash-resistant | Wipe or rinse carefully; do not assume it can be submerged |
| No water-resistance information | Use a damp cloth on the surface and keep liquid away from openings |
Marketing language varies, so look for an IP rating or clear cleaning instructions. If a cap or charging seal must be closed, check it before water touches the product.
Cleaning by material
Silicone
Quality silicone is non-porous and generally straightforward to clean with warm water and mild soap. Electronic silicone products should not be boiled or placed in a dishwasher. Even a fully waterproof motorised toy should be cleaned according to its own manual.
Glass and stainless steel
Non-porous glass and stainless steel are easy to wash, but inspect them before every use. Stop using glass if it is chipped or cracked, and check metal products for damaged coatings or sharp edges. Temperature play should remain moderate; extreme heat or cold can injure skin.
ABS plastic
Hard ABS surfaces can usually be wiped or washed easily, but seams and battery compartments need care. Remove batteries before long-term storage to reduce leakage risk.
TPE, TPR and soft sleeves
Soft elastomer materials require the manufacturer’s specific routine. Many stroker sleeves should be rinsed thoroughly, air-dried inside and out, and stored separately. Do not turn a sleeve inside out unless the brand explicitly permits it, as this can cause tearing.
Some soft materials can become tacky after drying and may require a dedicated renewal powder. Use only what the manufacturer recommends; ordinary talc is not a universal substitute.
What not to use
- Bleach, household disinfectant or abrasive cleaner unless the manufacturer specifically instructs it.
- Alcohol on soft materials or coatings unless expressly approved.
- Boiling water on electronic products.
- Dishwashers, microwaves or direct heaters.
- Perfumed wipes that leave residue.
- A shared cleaning brush or cloth that is not washed between products.
Drying is part of cleaning
Moisture trapped in a sleeve, charging recess or storage pouch encourages odour and material deterioration. Pat the surface dry, then leave the product in a clean, ventilated place until seams and internal channels are completely dry.
Do not put a damp toy into a sealed bag. For sleeve-style products, position the opening so air can circulate rather than leaving the product flat on a wet towel.
How to store toys properly
- Keep products cool, dry and away from direct sunlight.
- Use individual lint-free pouches or compartments so different materials do not remain pressed together.
- Do not leave heavy items resting on flexible toys.
- Keep charging cables labelled if several products use similar connectors.
- Remove disposable batteries for long periods of non-use.
- Charge rechargeable products periodically according to the manual rather than leaving them empty for months.
Sharing and moving between body areas
Clean a toy before and after every user. When a toy is shared, a new condom or barrier can add protection, but the barrier must be changed between partners and between different body openings. Never move a toy from anal to vaginal use without removing the barrier and cleaning the toy thoroughly.
For toys with textured seams or materials that are difficult to clean completely, barrier use is particularly important. A toy intended for anal use must have a secure flared base or another design that prevents it from being drawn fully into the body.
When to replace a toy
Replace the product if you notice:
- cracks, tears or peeling coatings;
- a persistent odour after proper cleaning;
- swelling, stickiness or a changed surface;
- corrosion or battery leakage;
- damaged charging ports or unreliable overheating;
- chips or cracks in glass.
The five-minute habit
Clean soon after use, rinse or wipe according to the manual, dry fully and return the product to its own pouch. That simple habit protects the material, keeps the next use pleasant and makes it much easier to notice damage before it becomes a problem.
